The Murray State women's basketball team close out is 2012-13 regular season on Saturday against Southeast Missouri for Senior Day. Prior to the game, Tessa Elkins, Jessica Holder, Mariah Robinson and Kyra Watson will be honored for their contribution to Racer women's basketball.
The Racers locked up their 15th consecutive OVC tournament appearance on Monday by topping Morehead State, 56-48, at Johnson Arena in Morehead.
The first half was flat for the Racers, as they struggled both shooting and rebounding the ball early in the game. However, Murray State was able to chip away at the lead to end the half on a 14-5 run and tie the game at 25 at the break.
Despite the late run, Morehead State outshot the Racers 45.5 to 33.3 percent in the frame. The Eagles also outworked Murray State on the boards in the half by a 19-12 margin.
However, the Racers would not give in and opened the second on a 16-3 run and never looked back. Despite trailing by as many as 16 in the stanza, Morehead went on a 12-5 late in the game to cut the lead to seven. That would be as close as the Eagles would get though, as Murray held on for the eight point victory.
As much as the first half belonged to Morehead, the second was all Racers. Murray State shot 41.4 percent from the floor in the half, including 40.0 percent from 3-point range, compared to just 24.0 and 23.5, respectively, for the Eagles. The Racers also dominated the boards in the second half, outrebounding Morehead, 25-12.
Erika Sisk and Keiona Kirby led Murray State in the game with 14 each, while Mariah Robinson had 12. Jessica Winfrey had a team-high eight boards for the Racers, while Robinson and Sisk added six each.
Saturday will be the 51st meeting in the series between the two schools, with the Redhawks leading 26-24. Despite the two-win advantage for SEMO, Murray State holds a 13-9 lead in Murray. However, in Cape Girardeau, the Racers have not had much luck and trail 10-16.
The Racers have actually made significant strides in evening the series in recent years and have won seven of the last 11 meetings, dating back to Jan. 7, 2008. Earlier this season, SEMO snapped a three-game MSU win–streak in the series when it topped the Racers, 70-58 in Cape Girardeau.
The Redhawks are currently 10-18 on the season and 4-11 in OVC play. The Redhawks have been eliminated from post-season contention and are on a three-game slide. On Monday, Southeast Missouri fell in their home finale to Tennessee Tech, 64-51.
Brittany Harriel led the team in scoring with 16 points, while also notching a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. Baillie Roberts is currently the Redhawks' leading scorer with 10.8 points per game; while Patricia Mack records nearly 10 rebounds per game at 9.3.
Saturday's game will be carried live on 1340 AM WNBS with Kyle Rogers bringing fans all the action starting at 4:30 p.m. Live stats and a free video stream, courtesy of the OVC Digital Network, will also be available with links available for both at Go Racers.com.
