Henson All-America Team I Sullivan Award
Murray State senior men's basketball student-athlete Isaiah Canaan picked up two postseason honors this week when he was named to the 2013 Lou Henson All-America Team and to the semifinal list for the AAU James E. Sullivan Award.
The Lou Henson All-America award is named in honor of the former great coach at Illinois and New Mexico State and later, the Lou Henson Player of the Year for mid-major basketball will be given as well. The AAU Sullivan Award will be given for the 83rd time this year and goes to the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.
Canaan and the Racers recently wrapped the 2012-13 season and ended one of the greatest careers in the 88-year history of the Murray State program.
Canaan, from Biloxi, Miss., leaves MSU ranked fifth all-time with 2,050 points, one of only six players that made it to the MSU 2000-Point Club and one of only 17 in the Ohio Valley Conference. He made more 3-point baskets (304) than anyone in MSU history and is third all-time in the OVC. Other accomplishments for Canaan include: third all-time (.419) in 3-point shooting percentage, sixth (476) in made free throws and assists (285), ninth (157) in steals and in free throw percentage (.803).
He was in the top-10 in NCAA D-I scoring in the 2012-13 season, finishing with 21.8 points per game with the fifth-best all-time MSU season with 676 points. He also set a MSU record with making at least one 3-point basket in his last 39 consecutive games.
Canaan won an All-OVC award in four straight seasons with Murray State including: OVC Freshman of the Year and All-OVC Newcomer team in 2010 and two OVC Player of the Year Awards in 2012 and 2013 which he shared with Belmont's Ian Clark. Canaan was also the OVC Male Athlete of the Year in 2012.
Canaan also leaves MSU as part of the winningest class in MSU history with 106 wins that included three straight OVC regular season titles, two trips to the NCAA Tournament (MSU had two of their three all-time NCAA wins with Canaan) and one trip to the NIT.
Already a seven-time All American after his junior campaign, Canaan was on several preseason teams including ones by John Wooden, James Naismith and Bob Cousy. Canaan is certain to pick up more honors before he embarks on a professional career that may include being chosen in the June 27 NBA Draft.
