OVC Release
Seniors Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel were named to the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball First Team Tuesday as Canaan was also named Co-OVC Player of the Year.
Canaan, from Biloxi, Miss., earned an All-OVC honor for a fourth straight season (He was Freshman of the Year and All-Newcomer Team in 2010, and one of only three MSU players to accomplish the feat. His back-to-back OVC Player of the Year honors puts him in an exclusive group of five at Murray State. He shared the OVC Player of the Year award with Belmont's Ian Clark, marking just the fourth time in league history that there have been co-winners.
Daniel, from Birmingham, Ala., makes All-OVC for the first time after also being named to the All-OVC Preseason Team with his teammate Canaan.
The Racer duo of Canaan and Daniel (along with Jordan Burge) make up the winningest class in Racer history with 105 wins as they take MSU into the OVC Tournament Friday.
“I'm very proud of Ed and Isaiah and what they've meant to me personally and to our University over the last four years,” MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “This is a tremendous honor for them. They follow a long list of great ones that have come through Murray State before them and there will be many after them. Ed and Isaiah set a high standard in our program.”
Canaan was the focal point of opposing teams and still scored at a higher clip (21.6 points per game) than he did as a junior. He has been in the top-10 nationally in scoring all season and ranks 11th in 3-pointers made/game (3.07). He had four games of 30 points or more this season, including a season-high 35 points in a double overtime victory at Morehead State. Canaan also ranked fourth in the OVC in assists (4.0/game) and 12th in steals (1.5/game). Canaan earned first-team All-OVC honors for the third-straight season.
“Isaiah has had a lot of responsibility to shoulder since last season and he handled it in a first-class manner thanks to his humility and character,” Prohm said. “The sky is the limit for his future and I'm proud of Isaiah for the person he has become. To be named to a second straight MVP award speaks to the way Isaiah has played in his senior year.”
Canaan has 1,999 career points and is looking to become the sixth member of the MSU 2000 Point Club and the 17th in the OVC.
Canaan is the 13th player in OVC history to repeat as OVC Player of the Year and third in six years (UT Martin's Lester Hudson
won the award in 2008 and 2009, while Morehead State's Kenneth Faried won in 2010 and 2011). Canaan is the 12th different Murray
State player to be named OVC Player of the Year (those 12 players have won 17 total awards) and first to repeat since Marcus Brown in 1995 and 1996.
Daniel has been a ferocious rebounder this season ranking much of the time in the top-10 nationally at 10.3 rebounds per game. His 15 double-doubles this season are also among the best in the nation. Part of three-straight OVC regular season championship teams, Daniel had his best season in a Racer uniform this season, nearly doubling his scoring and rebounding totals. The forward went from averages of 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds/game to 13.5 points and 10.3 rebounds/game. Daniel had 20 points and a season-high 18 rebounds in a road victory over Lipscomb in November and 15 points and 11 rebounds in a win over St. John's at the Charleston Classic. Daniel ranked fourth in the OVC in field goal percentage (55.7%) during the year. He needs six blocked shots to become the all-time MSU leader and had a career-high six blocks against Tennessee State.
“We had great hope for Ed when we first signed him out of Birmingham five years ago and he improved each season he was here,” Prohm said. “He helped us win some big games as a freshman including in the NCAA Tournament against Vanderbilt. He has basically been a starter since his sophomore season and has been a huge part of our success. He has done so much for us on both ends of the floor offensively and defensively and he has a bright future ahead of him too.”
