The Murray State Racers (21-9) meet the Belmont Bruins for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., in a 6 p.m. CT tip Saturday. The game will be heard over the air on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. ESPN2 will air the game live.
To see the Racers in the OVC Tournament final is common in the history of the league. As the 50th playing of the tournament comes to an end, the Racers are in the championship game for the 24th time and they've won it 15 times including two of the last three seasons.
MSU made a spot in the OVC final with an 81-73 win over Eastern Kentucky in the semifinals marking the first time the Racers and Colonels had met in the tournanent since 1995. Isaiah Canaan led the way for MSU with game-high 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting, and added six assists as he also zoomed past the 2,000 points mark for his career. Stacy Wilson added 17 points and Brandon Garrett had a gritty 11 points, on 5-of-7 shooting and six rebounds.
Trailing 51-50 with 14:08 remaining, the Racers locked down the Colonels and scored the knockout blow, scoring 11 straight points and going on a 16-2 run over the next 5:41. The run changed the game as MSU held off EKU who got as close as four points in the last few minutes.
With the win the Racers are 22-13 all-time in the OVC Tournament semifinals and have won 3-of-4. The Racers are in the OVC Tournament championship game for the third time in the last four years and eight of the last 15.
MSU is 15-9 all-time in OVC Tournament title games and has won the last five times they've been there: 2001 over Tennessee Tech, 2004 over Austin Peay, 2006 over Samford, 2010 over Morehead State and 2012 over Tennessee State. The last time MSU made the OVC title game and lost was in 2000 to Southeast Missouri State.
With a win, MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm can become the third Racer coach to win the OVC Tournament in his first two seasons. Scott Edgar did it in 1995 & 1996, while Tevester Anderson accomplished it in 1998-99.
The next win for the Racers will mark the 1,500th in the 88 seasons of the program.
