Daniel Competing At Portsmouth Invitational Pre-NBA Draft Camp

Murray State men's basketball student-athlete Ed Daniel is getting his professional career going this weekend as he participates in the Portsmouth Invitational in Portsmouth, Va. The Portsmouth event is by invitation only and serves as a first opportunity for players to open the eyes of professional teams from here at home in the National basketball Association and those from pro leagues all over the world.
Daniel, a 6-7 forward from Birmingham, Ala., was placed on a team sponsored by Sales Systems, LTD. He's part of an exclusive list of 65 players that are showing their skills this weekend.
In his first game on Thursday, the Racer senior from Birmingham, Ala., had a team-high 17 points hitting 7-of-12 from the field to go with six rebounds. He played 29 minutes and was 3-of-5 from the free throw line with one steal. His team lost a close game 81-74.
Daniel played his second game Friday afternoon and led his team to an 89-85 win while scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds. He was 4-of-7 from the field and 2-of-5 from the free throw line with two assists and a steal in 24 minutes.
Daniel was very upbeat Friday evening and happy to be playing well.
“I'm feeling light in my legs and like that I have a lot of energy,” Daniel said. “I feel like I got my legs back. The season was a long grind and it takes a toll on you. But my confidence level is high and I'm not worrying about anything, I'm just trying to go out there and play like I can play and not do more than I can do.”
“I've really felt since my sophomore year that I can play as a pro,” Daniel added. ”It's the same game. I'm playing here against a lot of seniors from all over the country that had great seasons, so I hope I can keep playing an impress some people.”
Daniel is one of three invited to Portsmouth from the Ohio Valley Conference including: Robert Covington (Tennessee State) and Ian Clark (Belmont).
All games at the Portsmouth Invitational are being played at Churchland High School.
An All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team pick after a great senior season, Daniel ranked in the top-10 in NCAA Division-I with 15 double-doubles, while his 10.0 per game rebound average was 14th in the nation. He scored 13.5 points per game ended up making a run at 1,000 career points as he finished with 931. Daniel is one of 12 MSU players to reach 700 career rebounds with 719. He also ended his MSU career No. 2 in all-time blocked shots with 156.
