The Murray State women's soccer team stayed unbeaten on Sunday, thanks to an early goal by junior Julie Mooney that led to 1-0 win at Cutchin Field. The 3-0-1 start to the season by the Racers is best in program history, surpassing the three-consecutive 3-1 starts from 2001 to 2003.
The would-be winning goal came in the seventh minute when junior Bronagh Kerins found Mooney with a pass as she was inside the six-yard box. Mooney then fired in a shot that clanged off of the right post before heading past the UALR goalkeeper, giving MSU a 1-0 lead it would never relinquish. Mooney's goal on Sunday, paired with her performance on Friday, gave her two goals and two assists for the week.
UALR (2-2) had several prime opportunities to equalize in the game, as it went on to out-shoot the Racers, 18-10, over the full 90 minutes. Of the 18 shots by the Trojans on the day, 11 went on goal and 10 were saved by freshman goalkeeper Savannah Haberman. In four matches and 335 minutes between the posts so far this year for Haberman, she has come up with 22 saves and has still yet to allow a goal.
After the game, head coach Beth Acreman spoke about her team's performance in the home opener, "It was an important Sunday game and it was our first regular-season game at Cutchin Field, so we were really zoned in and focused on being successful," said Acreman. "I am really happy for the girls to not only get the win, but to accomplish one of our main goals for every game and that is getting a shutout."
The Racer will now have nearly two weeks off before returning to the road a week from Friday for two matches in Alabama. MSU will travel to Mobile on Sept.13 to take on South Alabama, and then will stop off at Troy on the way back for an afternoon matinee on Sunday, Sept. 15.
