Murray State women's tennis team completed another successful weekend, this time at the Steve Baras Classic hosted by Chattanooga. The Racers won two draws and had a total five student-athletes in the six possible championship rounds of their respective singles draws.
Suzaan Stoltz took home the championship at the No. 6 draw, defeating Jessica Silva of UT Martin, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Her loss in the opening set was the only singles set Stoltz dropped for the entire tournament, winning her quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in straight sets. She was able to rebound though and took the final two sets to capture the win for MSU.
Murray State also won at No. 2 singles where both Carla Suga and Eleonore Tchakarova advanced to the final round. In the semifinals Saturday afternoon, Suga defeated Alexa Flynn of UTC in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, while Tchakarova had to come from behind 2-6, 6-1, 4-1 (ret.) against Carolina Faught of Alabama-Birmingham to earn her spot in the finals. Those two will play out the draw at Murray State later in the week.
Following the tournament, Coach Elkin said, "We faced a lot of tough competition this weekend. There were a lot of tough schools and athletes at this tournament and our girls really stepped up. We had some very close matches and won a number of tough three-setters. The girls definitely showed a lot of heart this weekend, which was great to see. I'm extremely proud of them."
Andrea Eskauriatza and Erin Patton were also in the final round of No. 1 and 5 singles respectively. Eskauriatza took UTC's Kayla Jones to three sets, but dropped a tough battle, 1-6, 6-3, 2-6. Patton also lost a competitive match to Catherine Ragon of Alabama-Birmingham, 2-6, 6-7 (2).
The Racers are off for the next four weeks before competing in their final fall tournament of the season at Arkansas State, Oct. 25-27.Â
