The Murray State Racers are back at home Saturday to host the Austin Peay Governors in their 118th meeting when they tip at 7:30 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The game is part of a double-header that begins at 5:15 p.m. when the MSU women's team hosts the Govs.
Racer Radio can be heard over the air on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The OVC Digital Network will provide online free streaming video at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers (8-7) are 3-0 at the start of the OVC season and APSU (8-8) is 2-0 in the early going. Both teams sport three-game win streaks entering the contest and both have wins over Southern Illinois, Southeast Missouri State and UT Martin. MSU has won five straight at home since a loss to Middle Tennessee (Nov. 26).
The series between the Racers and Govs is the top rivalry in the OVC. In 2009, ESPN The Magazine put the MSU-APSU series on their list of best college hoops rivalries.
The Racers lead the all-time series 76-41 including a 44-10 edge at home and 11-3 in the 16-year history of the CFSB Center. MSU won their meeting in Murray last season in a classic overtime game 75-68. The Govs last win at MSU was in 2011 66-64.
MSU is coming off their first road victory of the season 77-64 Wednesday at Eastern Kentucky. MSU jumped to a 14-3 lead and led 38-29 at half. Cameron Payne and Jarvis Williams led the MSU attack with 19 points each with Dexter Fields tossing in 15. The Racers shot 51 percent from the field at EKU. Williams was only one basket off the MSU single-game record when he was 9-of-9 from the field.
APSU beat Southeast Missouri State at home last Saturday 80-74 to follow up an 81-68 win over UT Martin (Jan. 2). The Govs are 2-0 at the start of the OVC season for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
The Racers are rebounding at a high level in the early going of the OVC. MSU has out-rebounded Southeast Missouri, UT Martin and Eastern Kentucky a combined 122-83. In league games, MSU leads the OVC with +13.0 rebound margin. Jarvis Williams is first in OVC games with a 14.7 average and offensive rebounds with 26. He has recorded seven double-doubles this season. Rebounding is an important statistic for the Racers because this season they're 7-0 when they win the battle of the boards and 0-7 when they don't.
The Racers hit the road next week for a pair of games in the Prairie State. On Thursday (Jan. 16) MSU plays at Eastern Illinois. The game will be aired locally on the Racer TV Network and online at ESPN3.com and OVCDigitalNetwork.com. MSU plays at SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 18) in a 2 p.m. tip on Fox Sports Midwest. All MSU games are heard over the air on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM. Racer basketball can also be heard online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com.
