The Murray State Racers to keep their winning ways going when they meet the SIU Edwardsville Cougars in a 1 p.m. tip Saturday at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill.
All MSU games are heard over the air on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Fox Sports Midwest will air the game and the OVC Digital Network has free streaming video at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers (10-7) pushed their mark in the Ohio Valley Conference to 5-0 Thursday when they erased an eight-point deficit at half time to beat the Eastern Illinois Panthers on their home floor 70-66. MSU used a 16-7 lead starting with 16:16 remaining and eventually took the lead for good when Dexter Fields hit a pair from the free throw line for a one point lead with 3:47 left. The game was still up for grabs inside 30 seconds on the clock when Payne nailed his third three of the game with 19 seconds left for a 66-62 lead. The Racers have won both of their OVC road games to date. They also won at Eastern Kentucky 77-64 (Jan. 8).
Cameron Payne and T.J. Sapp scored 21 and 20 points and Jonathan Fairell grabbed 14 rebounds as the Racers overcame poor shooting to shutdown the Panthers in the second half. MSU held EIU to 25 percent shooting (8-of-25) in the second half including 0-of-8 from 3-point range. MSU had a season-best nine blocked shots against EIU with Jarvis Williams swatting three and Jeffery Moss getting two,
SIUE (5-13) finished their 71-67 home win over Austin Peay on a 13-1 run to make their OVC record 2-3. SIUE earlier scored an 85-79 win over Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 4). The Cougars are 5-3 at home this season.
For a second straight week, MSU's Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne were named OVC Newcomer and Freshman of the Week. Both were outstanding last week in the MSU wins over EKU and APSU.
Payne is half way through the season and has already posted 92 assists and is 45th at MSU for a single season. The MSU record of 212 was set in the 1996-97 season by Chad Townsend. The game at EIU was just the second time this season that Payne hasn't been MSU's assist leader.
In the early going of the OVC season, the OVC East leads the West Division in head-to-head games 10-6. The Racers are 1-0 against the East with a win over EKU. The Racers return home next week for a pair of games against Tennessee State and Jacksonville State, two teams from the East Division. The Racers were the only road team to win Thursday night in the OVC as EKU, Morehead State, SIUE and Jacksonville State all held serve on their home courts.
After the SIUE game, the Racers are back at home next week for a pair of games with Tennessee Tech (Jan. 23) and Jacksonville State (Jan. 25). MSU Athletics is making the game a white out and all fans are asked to wear white to the game. The Tech game will be the first for the spring semester with the student body in attendance.
