MSU Looks To Keep Momentum Hosting JSU

The Racers (11-8) pushed their home win streak to seven Thursday afternoon with a 92-53 win that improved their record in the Ohio Valley Conference to 6-1. Jeffery Moss was on fire with a career-high 31 points and hit his first eight shots from the field including four straight 3-point baskets. Moss finished the game 12-of-18 from the field and 7-of-9 from 3-point range. The Racers shot 63 percent in the first half and pushed their mark to 8-0 this season when winning the rebound stat. They beat Tech 45-30 on the boards. Cameron Payne had a career-high nine assists. MSU hit 15 3-pointers and fell just shy of the 1994 school record that came against Campbellsville.
JSU scored a 71-59 win at Austin Peay Thursday with 25 points from Brian Williams as he matched his career high. The senior became JSU's all-time leader with 89 starts and minutes played with 3,431. The Gamecocks (10-13, 4-4 OVC) led 35-23 at halftime and won for the first time at APSU's home court. The Racers play at APSU next Friday (Jan. 31).
Payne, the frontrunner for OVC Freshman of the Year, entered the week ninth in OVC scoring at 15.0 points per game and fourth with 5.3 assists. Jarvis Williams was second with 10.2 rebounds a game and 13th nationally. Moss was third in the OVC and 59th in the nation shooting 86 percent from the free throw line. Williams had his eighth double-double of the season Thursday against Tech when he pulled down 15 rebounds.
MSU enters the game on a seven-game home win streak and are 9-1 at home this season. MSU's last home loss was to Middle Tennessee (Nov. 26). The Racers are 190-33 (.850) in 16 seasons at the CFSB Center and 111-22 (.832) against OVC opponents. MSU Coach Steve Prohm is 31-6 at the CFSB Center in his third season.
The Racers and Gamecocks meet for the 18th time in their series that started in 2004 when JSU joined the OVC. MSU is 8-0 all-time at home against JSU and lost for the first time on JSU's home court last season.
Next week the Racers only have one game and that will be a rare Friday night tilt in Clarksville, Tenn., against Austin Peay. The game (Jan. 31) will tip at 8 p.m. at the Dunn Center and be aired on television by the CBS Sports Network. Murray State won the first meeting of the season with Govs in the CFSB Center 89-67 on Jan. 11.
