The Murray State Racers travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to meet the Austin Peay Governors for the second time this season Friday at 8 p.m. at the Dunn Center. The game will be televised by the CBS Sports Network. All MSU games are heard over the air on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and free online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com.
The Racers (12-8) are coming off a two-game sweep of home games against Tennessee Tech (Jan. 23) 92-53 and Jacksonville State (Jan. 25) 73-65 as MSU pushed their win streak on their home court to eight straight. But now the Racers start a three-game road swing that takes them to Austin Peay, then next week to Belmont (Feb. 6) and Tennessee State (Feb. 8). The Racers are 2-7 on the road this season and 2-1 in the OVC with wins at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 8) and Eastern Illinois (Jan. 16). MSU lost at SIUE (Jan. 18).
The Governors (9-12) are 3-4 in the OVC after splitting a pair of games at home last week with a 71-59 loss to JSU (Jan. 23) and a 83-69 win over Tennessee Tech (Jan. 25). The Racers and Govs are paired in the OVC schedule and most times this season are swapping opponents.
The first MSU-APSU meeting this season came at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., where the Racers used a 22-6 run to end the half (Jan. 11) and kept their foot to the pedal and turned it into an 89-67 win. Jeffery Moss led MSU with 20 points and Jonathan Fairell grabbed 10 rebounds as MSU won their sixth straight against APSU.
For the third time this season, the dynamic duo of Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne were named OVC Newcomer and Freshman of the Week. Williams is second in the OVC and 13th nationally with 10.2 rebounds per game. Payne is the fourth ranked assist man in the OVC and is 44th in the nation. Nationally, he is tied for third among freshman in assists per game. Payne has been named OVC Freshman of the Week five times this season breaking the old mark of four my Lamont Sleets in the 1979-80 season.
The Racers are having a good season shooting from the 3-point line entering the APSU game fifth in the OVC and 88th in the nation hitting 36 percent. Moss is currently hitting 40 percent, while Dexter Fields is at 39 percent and T.J. Sapp is 37 percent. They currently rank 27th, 36th and 49th in single-season 3-point shooting at MSU.
MSU is enjoying a healthy 7.8 rebound margin in OVC play. They've had a double-digit rebound (either Williams of Fairell) in the last eight games.
