Payne & Williams Earn OVC Weekly Honors

The Murray State Racers picked up another set of weekly Ohio Valley Conference awards when Cameron Payne was named OVC Freshman of the Week and Jarvis Williams was OVC Newcomer of the Week. Voting is conducted in a poll of the league's sports information directors.
The pair of Racers was outstanding last week in MSU's wins over Southeast Missouri and UT Martin.
Payne, a freshman from Bartlett, Tenn., averaged 25 points a game and was 11-of-19 from 3-point range. He set two career-highs with 23 points against SEMO and upped it to 27 points against UT Martin Sunday. For the week, Payne hit 55 percent from the field and 58 percent from 3-point range. He was 81 percent from the line. He also added 5.0 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Williams, a junior from Macon, Ga., picked up his first weekly award and averaged 16.5 rebounds a game and 18 points. He recorded rebounds of 18 and 15 in the MSU wins and his 18 rebound game against SEMO tied the CFSB Center record. Williams scored 20 points against the Skyhawks and 16 versus the Redhawks.
Payne has won three OVC Freshman of the Week awards matching Ivan Aska and Isaiah Canaan in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Aska and Canaan were OVC Freshman of the Year winners.
Lamont Sleets (1979-80) was OVC Freshman of the Week four times and has the top spot in program history.
The Racers (7-7, 2-0 OVC) play in Richmond Wednesday against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The 6 p.m. CT game from McBrayer Arena can be heard over the air on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The Racer TV Network will air the game on the local cable systems of Time Warner, Mediacom and Murray Electric. The game will also be streamed online at ESPN3.com.
