The 5th-ranked Murray State rifle team fell by just 11 points, 1151-1140, Friday to No. 9 Nebraska at the Nebraska Rifle range in Lincoln.
"Our team score was down today," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "But it was down a little for everyone during a specific part of the match, when that happens you end up with a lower score that expected, but with specific things to fix. That's how we will become a good team, by growing and learning to deal with distraction and expectations."
"I thought Ivan and Kelsey did a solid job today," Lollar continued. "Each had their own stretches to deal with and both focused, fought and came through well. Tomorrow we have Ole Miss and are looking forward to the chance to put to use what we learned today."
Senior Kelsey Emme led the way on the day with an aggregate of 1160, while also notching MSU's best score in the day in air rifle at 589. Meanwhile, in smallbore, Junior Tessa Howald had her team's best score in that event at 577. Howald finished the match with a total score of 1156, when combined with her 579 in air rifle, while Emme rounded out her match with a 571 in smallbore.
Freshman Ivan Roe notched a 576 in in small bore and a 586 in air rifle to finish the match with an aggregate of 1157. Also turning in a solid performance on the day was fellow freshman Ben Estes, who followed his 573 in smallbore with a 585 in air rifle for MSU's second best total at 1158. Sam Harris fired a 559 in smallbore, while Kaitlyn Wilson had a 583 in air rifle to round out Murray State's squaded shooters.
The Racers will return to the Nebraska Rifle Range on Saturday for a neutral site showdown with 14th-ranked Ole Miss.
