Pack the Arena as Volleyball Faces SIUE

The Murray State volleyball team (16-4, 7-1 OVC) play host to SIU Edwardsville (9-17, 1-7 OVC) and Eastern Illinois (9-12, 3-5 OVC) Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. at Racer Arena. The team is looking to bring in a record crowd to Racer Arena through a promotion called Operation 1,024. The largest Racer Arena crowd for volleyball was 823 on November 7, 2006 when Murray State took on UT Martin. Help cheer on your OVC leading Racers. Free t-shirts and pizza will be provided.
Murray State continues to see themselves in NCAA rankings. The Racers have moved into the top 10 and are now ranked eighth in digs per set. MSU is ranked in the top 50 in five other areas; assists per set (41st), hitting percentage (45th), kills per set (25th), match W-L percentage (27th), and opponent hitting percentage (30th). Individually, Sam Bedard is ranked 39th in assists per set and 111th in total assists. Ellie Lorenz is ranked top 100 in two areas; 34th in digs per set, and 92nd in total digs. Scottie Ingram is ranked 81st in kills per set. Three Racers are ranked in points per set; Ingram (117th), Besselsen (200th), and Taylor Olden (257th).
This past weekend, MSU swept both OVC opponents Belmont and Tennessee State. Against Belmont, three Racers recorded double-doubles. Ingram turned in 22 kills to do along with 10 digs. Olden notched 13 kills with 13 digs. Bedard added 29 assists with 15 digs. Lorenz led the team with 20 digs. During the Tennessee State match Besselsen led the Racers with 13 kills, followed by Ingram who added 11. Bedard led the team with 33 assists, while Lorenz led with 20 digs. After the weekend, Ingram, Lorenz, and Bedard were named Offensive, Defensive, and Setter of the Week, respectively. Ingram's 22 kills against Belmont, ties for fourth in the Racers Individual Match Highs for three set matches.
Earlier this season, MSU defeated the Cougars 3-1. Besselsen and Ingram led the team with 17 kills, while Lorenz led the team with 17 digs. Bedard turned in 43 assists. Murray State hit .223, while holding the Cougars to a .081 hitting percentage. MSU holds a five game winning streak against the Cougars at Racer Arena.
SIU Edwardsville was swept by Southeast Missouri and UT Martin. Against Southeast Missouri, the Cougars hit .059 as a team for the match. SIUE was led by Kristen Torre and Emily Harrison with seven kills apiece. Chelsea Colclasure and Alicia Streetar each added 12 digs. While facing UT Martin, Torre led the Cougars with 12 kills, while Colclasure led with 19 digs. Mallory Mangun added 25 assists. They improved their hitting to .143 against the Skyhawks.

Eastern Illinois split their matches defeating UT Martin and then falling to Southeast Missouri in a five set match. Against UT Martin, Chelsea Lee turned in 17 kills while Abby Saalfrank recorded 12. Maria Brown and Winner chipped in eight kills apiece. Marah Bradbury dished out 44 assists, while Stephanie Wallace added 17 digs. The team hit .169 against the Skyhawks. While playing Southeast Missouri, Saalfrank led the team with 22 kills and a .475 hitting percentage. Four Panthers had double-digit dig performances. Bradbury had a match high 60 assists. The team improved their hitting percentage to .253 against the Redhawks.
