MSU Schedule I Tickets - Regular Season & Challenge In Music City
The official start of men's basketball practice happened Wednesday for the Murray State Racers as hopes and promise pervade the players, coaches and fans.
With the changes the NCAA made to the start of practice in 2013, the official beginning of fall practice has a different feel than it did when October 15th or a date close to it was the day when teams could begin.
"We're excited to get going," Racers' Head Coach Steve Prohm said. "Practice is different now. We've been going two hours a week for several weeks now and this is our first of 30 days. We took off last weekend for fall break, so we're out here today and we'll go Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and take Sunday off. And get going then into next week."
The 2014-15 season finds the Racers trying for their 28th consecutive winning season. Murray State and UConn share the fourth-best active streak with 27 straight. The Racers rank behind only Arizona (30), Kansas (31) and Syracuse (44).
The Racers begin the season on a 15-game streak when they host the Houston Cougars in the opener (Nov. 14) at the CFSB Center.
MSU has four starters back from the 2013-14 squad that won the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship and went 23-11. The Racers enter the season on a streak of five-straight 20-win seasons, a program record. Cameron Payne and Jarvis Williams are team anchors and are returning All-Ohio Valley Conference selections. Payne was also OVC Freshman of the Year. He scored 16.8 points and dished out 5.4 assist per game and Williams led the nation in field goal percentage while scoring 14.9 points and grabbing 9.9 rebounds. MSU also returns seniors Jonathan Fairell (6.8ppg, 6.8rpg), T.J. Sapp (13.3ppg) and junior Jeffery Moss (13.2ppg, 3.4rpg).
"We bring a lot of guys back," Prohm said. "I think we averaged about 80 points a game last season and off the top of my head, I think we bring back about 70 points. But our focus will not be offense, our focus will be getting better on the defensive end."
Prohm, 75-23 in his first three seasons at MSU, was the 2012 OVC Coach of the Year and Basketball Times National Coach of the Year.
The Racers get things going at 7 p.m. (Oct. 30) with Racer Mania at the CFSB Center. Doors open at 6:45p and fans will get to see both the Racer women's and men's teams scrimmage and have time to get autographs.
MSU hosts Freed-Hardeman (Nov. 6) in an exhibition game at the CFSB Center.
The Racers are also part of the Challenge In Music City during Thanksgiving weekend in Nashville. The Racers have three games in three days (Nov. 28-30) and face Portland, Valparaiso and Drake at Municipal Auditorium.
