Soccer’s Season Comes To A Close At OVC Tournament
11/6/2014 6:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Murray State women's soccer's 2014 season came to an abrupt halt on Thursday night as the third-seeded Racers were ousted from the 2014 OVC tournament by the six-seed, Morehead State, 5-1, at Houck Stadium in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The Eagles were first on the board in the 12th minute when Macy Cobb took a shot that was saved by MSU goalkeeper Shelby Haworth, only to have the rebound knocked in by Jade Flory. Twelve minutes later, the Eagles scored again, this time off a corner kick that was put in by Caity Fox.
Harriet Withers had two good chances in the opening stanza with one shot going just over the goal and the other clanging off the near post. Angela Black made it 3-0 before halftime when she scored off a pass from Paige Webber.
The Racers looked to bounce back in the second half, but Kelsey Gomez had other ideas as she scored just over a minute into the frame to boost the Eagles' lead to 4-0. Cobb added a fifth goal from Gomez in the 51st minute giving MSU seeming insurmountable odds to overcome. In the 56th minute, Withers finally found the back of the net for the seventh time this season, but it was too little too late as the Racers fell, 5-1.
Morehead State outshot the Racers, 16-15, in the game and finished with 13 shots on goal compared to eight by MSU. Kaitlynn Murphy had seven saves on the day for the Eagles, while Haworth had eight.
Murray State finishes the 2014 campaign with five more total wins than 2013. In OVC play, the Racers went from ninth with a record of 3-7 to third with a 7-3 mark.
