The Murray State Racers carry a six-game win streak into their final game before Christmas when travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face the Southern Illinois Salukis. Tip time at the SIU Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. Monday.
The Racers (8-4) are looking to even the all-time series with SIU and to win at the SIU Arena for the first since 1990. MSU has lost their last four trips to SIU. MSU won last season's meeting at home. The Racers are playing their fourth game this season against a team from the Missouri Valley Conference. MSU defeated Drake in Nashville 68-69 (Nov. 30), Evansville 81-79 (Dec. 13) on the road and Saturday defeated Illinois State at home 89-77. The Racers are 55-43 against current members of the MVC and have won five straight since losing in the NIT to Missouri State in 2011.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis. Online video streaming is available at SIUSalukis.com.
Shooting and rebounding have been the strongest parts of MSU's game in this current win streak. Saturday broke a run of four straight games of 11 or more 3-point baskets for the Racers. In the streak MSU is shooting 53 percent from long range on 58-of-108 shots. Overall, MSU is hitting 55 percent from the field on 182-328 shots. Even though MSU is still at a small deficit in season rebounding, they've won the boards in the last six games 127-102. MSU has won back-to-back games in rebounding for the first time this season against D-I teams.
Sophomore Cameron Payne, has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week in each of the last two weeks, with another vote due Monday afternoon. The OVC Preseason Player of the Year, Payne is on the preseason watch lists for the Bob Cousy and Lou Henson awards. Payne enters the SIU game ranked sixth in the nation with 2.7 steals per game. The Racers are 23rd with 9.1 picks per game.
Payne leads a trio of Racers that are closing on joining the MSU 1000-Point Club. Entering the SIU game, Payne (Soph.) has 798 points, while Jarvis Williams (Sr.) has 698 and Jeffery Moss (Jr.) has 686.Â
After the SIU game, the Racers have an extending time over the Christmas break until they play again. The Racers host Alabama A&M (Dec. 30). MSU's OVC opener is at Morehead State (Jan. 3).
