Payne Nabs OVC Player Of The Week Award

Murray State sophomore Cameron Payne was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday in a vote of the league's sports information directors, which marked his third of the season.
The OVC Preseason Player of the Year helped the Racers to their seventh-straight win (Dec. 22) at Southern Illinois 83-71. He scored a game-high 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and 3-of-10 from 3-point range. He was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and added seven assists and a pair of steals.
Payne is certainly having an MVP-type season through 13 games. He's second in the OVC and 31st in the nation with 19.1 points per game. He's first in the OVC with 87 made field goals, 15th nationally. Other national rankings for Payne include 27th with 5.6 assists per game and 12th with 2.6 steals per game.
He is also on the watch lists for the Bob Cousy and Lou Henson awards. The Cousy Award identifies the best point guard in the nation, while the Henson Award goes to the best mid-major player.
The Racers have won four OVC weekly honors this season with Payne's three and one from Jarvis Williams (Nov. 24).
The Racers (9-4) are at home Tuesday (Dec. 30) against Alabama A&M at 7 p.m. The MSU women's team host Brescia at 5 p.m. The day is a doubleheader at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
