The Murray State Racers begin a three-game home stand when they host the SIU Edwardsville Cougars at 7 p.m. in the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. Â The OVC Digital Network has free streaming video online. All MSU games are heard over the air on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and free online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com.
The match up provides a clash between the top teams in the OVC West Division as the Racers (14-9, 9-2 OVC) host the Cougars (10-15, 6-5 OVC). The Racers enter the game with a three-game lead in the division with five games remaining. Eastern Illinois (9-15, 6-6) plays at Austin Peay Thursday and visits the Racers on Saturday. The week of games will go a long way in deciding the division. MSU is also very much in the hunt for the overall OVC title. The Racers are 9-2 and Belmont is 10-2. The Racers are coming off a split of last week's road games at Belmont and Tennessee State. MSU lost a 99-96 decision at BU (Feb. 6), but came back to win 73-65 at TSU (Feb. 8).
SIUE won the first meeting of the season with the Racers 67-60 at home (Jan. 18) and snapped the MSU's five-game win streak and gave them their first conference loss. There were 11 lead changes in the first seven minutes and MSU led 37-32 at half. The Cougars tied it at 51-51 and took the lead for good with 8:41 left. Jeffery Moss led MSU with 17 points.
Racers' head coach Steve Prohm and staff have done an incredible job of retooling the team and getting them right back in the OVC mix. MSU has done this after losing All-OVC performers Isaiah Canaan, Ed Daniel and Stacy Wilson and with only one senior, seven underclassmen and one returning starter. The Racers are 66-21 (.758) in the last three seasons under Prohm. MSU is 89-30 (.747) in the last four seasons and 120-35 (.774) in the last five. In the OVC, MSU is 34-9 (.790) under Coach Prohm. 48-13 (.786) and 65-14 (.822) in the last four and five seasons.
After starting the season with a tough non-conference  schedule that included playing some difficult road games, the Racers have found their stride in OVC play. MSU was 5-7 in non-league games and now 9-2 in OVC games.
The top-5 RPI teams MSU has faced this season include: Belmont, Dayton, Saint Mary's, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. That group is 86-38 (.693) overall and 37-17 (.709) in conference play.
The Racers will be trying to reverse a two-game losing streak to the Cougars, both coming on the road at the end of the 2012-13 season and their first game this season was also in Edwardsville. MSU is 7-1 all-time against SIUE at home.
For the fifth time this season, Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne earned weekly honors from the OVC in the same week. Payne was OVC Freshman of the Week for the seventh time and Williams OVC Newcomer for the fifth. Payne extends his MSU record of OVC weekly freshman awards to seven ahead of the old mark of four by Lamont Sleets in the 1979-80 season. The OVC record of 11 was set by Eastern Kentucky's Matt Witt in the 2002-03 season.Â
