Racers Coming Down The Stretch - Host EIU Saturday

The second game of the season between the two finds the Racers (15-9) on top of the Ohio Valley Conference West Division at 10-2, tied in the loss column for the overall lead in the league with Belmont (11-2). The Racers defeated SIUE at home Thursday 82-72. MSU trailed by eight points early, but erased that by half time and led by 11 (46-35). MSU got a double-double from Jarvis Williams with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Payne added 17 points and five assists. The win over SIUE pushed MSU's home win streak to nine straight and to 11-1 this season. With two games left at home this season, the Racers are trying for an undefeated season for the first time since the 2009-10 team went 9-0.
EIU (9-16) fell to 6-7 in the OVC after dropping an 88-83 game at Austin Peay Thursday. Panthers senior Sherman Blanford scored 32 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the loss.
Murray State's consecutive winning seasons streak is now 27 straight after the Racers clinched a winning season Thursday. MSU is in lofty company with Syracuse who is headed to their 44th straight. Kansas, Arizona will have winning seasons for 31 and 30 straight. The Racers will remain tied with UConn at 27 as the Huskies are also headed for a winning season. After a losing season (13-15) in 1986-87, Steve Newton started the run in the 1987-88 season and has been followed by Scott Edgar, Mark Gottfried, Tevester Anderson, Mick Cronin, Billy Kennedy and now Steve Prohm.
Prohm is one of the most successful coaches in all of college basketball and he has done a lot in only three seasons. The Racers are 67-21 (.761) in the last three seasons under Prohm. MSU is 90-30 (.750) in the last four seasons and 121-35 (.775) in the last five. In the OVC, MSU is 35-9 (.795) under Coach Prohm. 49-13 (.790) and 66-14 (.825) in the last four and five seasons.
Jarvis Williams has proven to be a double-double machine this season as he recorded his 12th Thursday against SIUE. Williams is also on a string of four straight double-doubles coming into the EIU game.
After the game with EIU, the Racers have only one home game remaining this season. MSU hosts Morehead State (Feb. 22) and the game will mark the final home game for Dexter Fields. As MSU's only senior, Fields has provided tremendous leadership and his 3-point numbers have been outstanding. Coming into the EIU game, Fields is 26-of-53 from 3-point range to rank second in the OVC in league games at .491.Â
