Williams & Payne Earn Weekly OVC Honors
2/17/2014 11:32:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Murray State's Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne were recognized again as the best one-two punch in the Ohio Valley Conference as they were named OVC Newcomer of the Week and Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season in the same week.
Voting for the weekly OVC awards is conducted by the league's sports information directors.
Both Racer stars have set Murray State records. Williams has won OVC Newcomer six times, topping the four awards that B.J. Jenkins received in the 2009-10 season and the four Maurice Cannon had in 1991-92. The OVC record is seven by Jacksonville State's Trenton Marshall in 2009-10.
Payne, who earns the award for the eighth time this season, already had the Murray State record for OVC Freshman of the Week when he passed Lamont Sleets who had four awards in 1979-80. The OVC record of 11 is held by Matt Witt of Eastern Kentucky in 2002-03.
The Racer duo had another great week in helping MSU to home wins over SIUE and Eastern Illinois.
Williams, a junior from Macon, Ga., scored 15.5 points per game and grabbed 10.0 rebounds. He had his fourth straight double-double and 12th of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds against SIUE. Saturday he scored 12 points and had eight rebounds against EIU. Williams shot 78 percent from the field for the week on 11-of-14 shots.
Payne, a freshman from Bartlett, Tenn., scored 13.0 points per game and dished out 4.5 assists for the week. He scored 17 points and had five assists in the SIUE game and scored nine points and had four assists against EIU.
The Racers (16-9, 11-2 OVC) play the final home game of the season Saturday when they host the Morehead State Eagles in a 7 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The game will also mark the final home game for Racer senior Dexter Fields who will be honored before the game.
Sherman Blanford of Eastern Illinois was named the OVC Player of the Week.
