The Murray State softball team dropped its final game of Memphis' Blues City Classic on Sunday, falling 7-2 to Lipscomb at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss. Following the end of the Classic, in which the Racers posted a 2-3 record, both Alexa Becker and Cayla Levins were named to the All-Tournament second team.
The Bisons (12-2) were first on the board on the game with two runs in the first, followed by two runs in the second. Murray State cut into the lead in the third when Erica Howard came up with the Racers' first hit of the afternoon, a RBI single that drove in Levins, who scored her third run of the weekend.
Lipscomb would go on to add two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to build what would eventually be an insurmountable lead. Murray State did add one more run in the fifth on a solo shot by Jessica Twaddle, but it was not enough as the Racers fell 7-2.
In addition to Howard and Twaddle, Leslie Bridges and Becker also came up with hits in the game. Brianne Welch led the Bisons on the afternoon by going 3-for-3 with a home run, while Paige Neely went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
In the circle, Ashley Anderson (4-0) got the win for Lipscomb by holding the Racers to just one earned run on four hits over a full seven innings. Mason Robinson (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season for MSU, as she allowed three earned runs on five hits over one inning of work.
Levins finished her week with a .429 average by going 6-for-14 with a double, a triple, a walk, three runs and three RBIs. Meanwhile, Becker also had a successful trip to the Memphis metropolitan area, as she went 6-for-18 with two home runs, including her first career grand slam, five RBIs and a walk.
Next weekend, the Racers will make the short drive to Carbondale for Southern Illinois' Coach B Classic. During the four-game stretch at SIU's Charlotte West Stadium, Murray State will do battle with Miami (OH), Kansas, Western Illinois and the host Salukis.
