All-Time Series vs. SEMO: SEMO leads 32-25
All-Time Series in Cape Girardeau: SEMO leads 19-10
First Meeting: W 42-26 in Cape Girardeau, Feb. 16, 1974
Last Meeting: W 66-55 in Murray, Feb. 19, 2013
MSU Last Game: W 84-81 vs. Morehead State (Feb. 24)
The Murray State women's basketball team will put an end to its 2013-14 campaign on Saturday when it travels to Southeast Missouri. With the OVC Tournament no longer a possibility for the Racers, they will be looking to end their season on a positive note and win their fourth game in their last six attempts.
The Racers sent senior Jessica Winfrey off on a positive note when they topped Morehead State, 84-81, on Senior Night Monday at the CFSB Center. Murray State, which led by as many as 14 in the second half, had to overcome a rally by the Eagles in the waning minutes of the contest in order to get the win. However, the Racers were able to keep Morehead at bay by knocking down nine of 10 free throws in the final five minutes, including going 4-for-4 in the final seven seconds.
Nikia Edom led Murray State with 17 points on a night in which she went 5-for-6 from the floor, 3-for-4 from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. Winfrey followed closely on her big night with 15 points, including going a perfect 5-for-5 at the charity stripe. The senior also pulled down four boards in the game, giving her 801 for her career and making her just the sixth player in program history to reach the 800 rebound plateau.
Janssen Starks added 15 points to the cause on the night, while Taylor Porter chipped in 11. Netanya Jackson led MSU with nine rebounds on the night, to go along with 13 points, to round out the five Racers in double-digits.
Â
The Racers and Southeast Missouri have met on 57 previous occasions, with the Redhawks getting the better of MSU in 32 of those meetings. The Racers put an end to a two-game skid in the series last Wednesday when they topped the Redhawks, 66-55, at the CFSB Center.
In Cape Girardeau, despite trailing the all-time series there 19-10, MSU's luck appears to be turning. Murray State has won four of the last six meetings at the Show Me Center, falling just twice since 2008, once in 2009 and once last season.
Â
On Monday, Southeast Missouri's road to the got a lot more difficult on Monday when they fell at Tennessee Tech, 63-61, causing them to need a win and a lot of help to make the eight-team field. Reigning OVC Player of the Week Patricia Mack did all she could, scoring 17 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. Mack is the current leading scorer and rebounder for SEMO, averaging 9.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
As a team, SEMO averages 63.4 points per game while allowing 70.0. The Redhawks do outrebound opponents, however, at a rate of 39.0 to 38.2. On the season, SEMO is shooting 38.1 percent from the field and 29.1 from 3-point range, while allowing opponents to shoot 41.2 and 32.1, respectively.
