The history is short between these two schools located only 150 miles apart, but in the short time they've been in the OVC, they've played two classic games. The first meeting, last February, came down to the wire as the Racers won 79-74 on a 3-pointer by Isaiah Canaan with 35 second remaining. The second meeting was taken by the Bruins in the OVC Tournament title game last March. Kerron Johnson's jumper with 1.2 seconds left in overtime was the difference as Belmont won 70-68. This meeting will be MSU's first visit to Belmont since 1998 and their first to the Curb Event Center. MSU leads the all-time series 5-2.
Both teams have been rolling along through the rugged OVC with only a few setbacks. The Racers (13-8, 8-1 OVC) played only once last week and that was a 96-88 win at Austin Peay (Jan. 31). Jarvis Williams scored his ninth double-double of the season with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Dexter Fields hit a career-high five 3-point baskets and Cameron Payne had a career-high 12 assists as the Racers pushed to 8-1 in the OVC with their only loss at SIUE (Jan. 18).
Belmont (17-8, 8-2 OVC) split road games last week with a 76-73 win at Morehead State (Jan. 29). BU trailed by seven with 1:19 left, but stormed back to win. On Saturday, Tech had the Bruins down by 19 in second half and held off a rally to beat Belmont in Cookeville, Tenn., 81-76. Belmont's other OVC loss was at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 16) 74-63. Belmont is 8-1 at home this season with their only loss coming to VCU (Dec. 1) 81-68.Â
Racers' head coach Steve Prohm has taken a practically new team this season and molded them into championship contenders. The Racers have only one senior, seven underclassmen and only one returning starter, but are still on track to keep the program's amazing run of 26 straight winning seasons going. The Racers are 65-20 (.764) in the last three seasons under Prohm. MSU is 88-29 (.752) in the last four seasons and 119-34 (.777) in the last five. In the OVC, MSU is 33-8 (.804) under Coach Prohm. 47-12 (.796) and 64-13 (.831) in the last four and five seasons.
Murray State's Williams and Payne were named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week and Freshman of the Week. It marks the fourth time this season that the dynamic duo has won awards in the same week.
The Racers' road trip to Music City continues Saturday at Tennessee State when MSU faces TSU at the Gentry Center in a 7:30 p.m. tip. The Racer TV Network will air the game locally on the cable systems of Time Warner, Murray Electric and Mediacom and the game will be streamed on ESPN3.com. The OVCDigitalNetwork also has streaming video.
