I Box Score (PDF) I OVC Tournament Bracket
The Murray State Racers played their first overtime game of the season Saturday and lost a heartbreaker 118-115 in double overtime to Southeast Missouri State at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Racers (18-10) saw their five-game winning streak snapped and they missed out on a share of the Ohio Valley Conference regular season title finishing 13-3.
Murray State goes into next week's OVC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will play the late semifinal Friday at 9 p.m. in Nashville's Municipal Auditorium.
Trailing for the first time at half in 11 games, the Racers quick erased the Redhawks' 52-46 lead with a 7-0 run for a 53-52 lead.
MSU had their largest lead of the second half when Dexter Fields hit a 3-pointer for a 73-68 lead with 9:35 remaining. But SEMO had a 14-2 run for their largest lead of the game at seven points (84-77) at the 5:23 mark. Jeffery Moss hit a three with 1:17 remaining to cut the SEMO lead to three and after T.J. Sapp forced a jump ball, he hit the tying 3-pointer at :18, sending the game into overtime tied 92-92.
MSU took the lead when they made the first hoop in the overtime as Sapp hit a pair of free throws.
MSU trailed by as many as four points in the first extra time but had a chance to win with :04 left, but they couldn't hit the needed free throws sending the game to a second overtime tied at 105-105.
Just like the first OT, the Racers got the lead early when Jarvis Williams scored on a third try for a 109-107 lead with 3:55 left. The game was tied 111-111 when SEMO's Antonius Cleveland hit a 3-pointer with 2:05 left. The Racers never got the lead back.
The game ended when MSU had a would-be tying 3-pointer by Cameron Payne blocked. The resulting run-out dunk by SEMO's Nino Johnson gave the Redhawks a 118-113 lead as fans stormed the court. When the court was cleared, a technical foul was given to Johnson for hanging on the rim and 4-tenths of a second were put back on the clock. MSU's Jeffery Moss made a pair of free throws on the technical foul and when the Racers tried to inbound the ball on the next play, it was tipped and time expired for SEMO to win the game in double overtime 118-115.
With 50-minutes of total playing time today, the stat sheet was epic for the Racers. MSU had four players with 20 points with 25 each from Williams and Payne, plus 24 from Sapp. Moss added 22 points and Fields added 15. Williams had his 13th double-double of the season with a game-high 15 rebounds.
The game marked MSU's first overtime game since last spring's OVC Tournament title game with Belmont and their first double-overtime game since last February at Morehead State. MSU is 27-17 in overtime games since 1983.
