The Murray State men's basketball team has accepted an invitation to play in the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).
The Racers will learn of their first round assignment once the selections for the NCAA Tournament and National Invitation Tournament (NIT) have been made.
First round CIT games will be played March 18-19 where Murray State will begin with a road game.
If the Racers can advance, they'll play in the second round March 21-22. The CIT quarterfinals are slated for March 25-27 with the semifinals April 1. The championship game is April 3. The semifinals and championship will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
The Racers (18-11) ended their stay in the OVC Tournament (March 7) with an 86-83 defeat to Eastern Kentucky in the semifinals in Nashville.
Competing in post-season play is attractive for MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm because the Racers are a young team and have only one senior in Dexter Fields. MSU's roster features four scholarship players that are in their first season with the program and seven underclassmen.
"We're very excited to be in post-season play and we're looking forward to trying to advance," Prohm said. "The experience for our team is invaluable. Our goal from day one was the NCAA Tournament and it always will be, and we are disappointed in not making it. But this tournament will prove very beneficial us and we're excited to be a part of it."
The news of the Racers accepting a spot in the CIT means they'll have played in the post-season in two of Steve Prohm's three seasons as head coach. In his rookie season in 2011-12, the Racers were 31-2 and advanced to one game shy of the NCAA Sweet 16. Since 2010, the Racers have made two NCAA Tournament appearances (including two wins), one appearance in the NIT and now a spot in the 2014 CIT.
The Racers will also have the chance to keep their string of 20-win seasons alive. It currently stands at four straight which has tied the school record set between 1997-2000.
Information about tickets will be available once first round match-ups have been determined. The MSU Ticket Department can be accessed online at GoRacers.com or by calling (270) 809-3000.
The CIT is a 32-team field that is drawn from non-BCS schools and all 31 games of the tournament are played at campus sites. In an effort to minimize travel and missed class time, the CIT uses a format that determines future opponents by previous results. This means pairings are made after games are played and teams in the same geographical area are likely to be paired. The CIT was first played in 2009 as a 16-team event. The CIT was expanded to 24 teams in 2010 and to 32 teams in 2012.
