The 2013 film, The Home Team, that highlighted the Murray State men's basketball team, received excellent reviews at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
The film was shot in March of 2013 over a period of four days at the end of the Murray State basketball season in which the winningest class in program history was playing their final home games at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. Jordan Burge, Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel were featured as was Head Coach Steve Prohm and his then fiancé Katie Ross. The film also featured teammates, support staff, fans and supporters of the Racers. The Home Team was a perfect picture of the deep love a small Kentucky town has with its basketball team and the relationship the team has with its fans.
The Home Team was one of 13 films chosen to be shown at the South By Southwest Film Festival in the documentary shorts category.
Director Joshua Seftel said the film was reviewed in a positive way.
"They laughed and they cried," Seftel said. "Everyone that watched the film saw what a great place Murray is and the special relationship the fans have with the team."
The Home Team was also being shown in Austin in the festival's inaugural SXsports Interactive Programming category. The Home Team was featured along with other films of the past year that focused on the world of athletics.
Seftel is no stranger to producing compelling films that are athletics-centered. He has also directed projects on Olympian Allyson Felix, former NFL player Troy Vincent and Princeton's athletic director Gary Walters. Seftel received his first Emmy nomination at the age of 22 with his film Lost and Found, about Romania's orphaned children. His other work includes the documentary Taking On The Kennedys, stories for This His American Life, and the political satire War Inc., starring John Cusack, Marisa Tomei, and Ben Kingsley.
"Coming to Murray and meeting all of those wonderful people was an experience that I'll never forget," said Seftel. "When we got there and witnessed the two-way relationship the team had with the fans, it provided a backdrop that proved winning isn't everything and that it's the relationships that really matter. When people talk about Racer Family, I saw it first-hand."
Having the film crew come to Murray State was also a memorable experience for Racers' Head Coach Steve Prohm.

"Meeting Josh and the rest of the crew was an amazing experience and we're very glad they chose to highlight Murray State Basketball," Prohm said. "Through this film, I've had many positive comments about our program and about the Murray-Calloway County community. It has been a humbling experience and it confirmed to me again what a special thing we have going here." Since the filming of The Home Team, the main characters will always have a link to Murray State University. Steve and Katie Prohm are newlyweds after exchanging vows June 1. Steve is in his third season as head coach at MSU and the team recently wrapped up a 27th consecutive winning season. Katie continues teaching 6th grade English Language Arts at Calloway County Middle School. Jordan Burge is an entrepreneur in his hometown Mayfield, Ky., and is coaching basketball at his alma mater, Northside Baptist Christian School. Isaiah Canaan was drafted into the NBA last summer by the Houston Rockets and has split his rookie season between the big club and its NBA D-league team in Hidalgo, Texas. Ed Daniel is playing professionally in Italy. At the South By Southwest Film Festival, The Home Team and other films in the category were viewed and studied by a panel of judges. Seftel said The Home Team is likely to be chosen for other film festivals this year. Below is the official trailer that was produced for the Southwest Film Festival.
