Junior left hander Brock Downey struck out a career-high 12 and only allowed three base runners after the first inning to lead Murray State to a 7-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.
Downey (4-0) did not get flustered after allowing two runs in the first inning. The runs put an end to his streak of 13.2 consecutive scoreless innings. Downey has now allowed just two earned runs over his last 30 innings.
The 12 strikeouts marked the first time a Breds pitcher reached double digits in strikeouts since Daniel Calhoun fanned 14 against North Dakota State on March 7, 2009. Downey finished by allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and just one walk.
The Skyhawks (1-15, 0-5 OVC) struck in the first inning as Drew Erie singled up the middle and was sacrificed to second. With two outs, Nico Zych singled to left to score Erie. Zych scored one batter later as a high popup on the infield fell to the ground.
The Breds (9-7, 4-1 OVC) got a run back in the fourth inning with the help of a Skyhawk throwing error. Tyler Lawrence doubled over the head of the right fielder and went to third on an throwing error by the shortstop off the bat of Luke Daugherty. Dalton West drove in the runner with a groundout to shortstop.
MSU tied the game in the fifth inning on an Anthony Bayus RBI single through the right side. Ty Stetson started the two-out rally with a single to right field. Matt McGowan followed with a grounder right through the third baseman to keep the inning alive and move Stetson into scoring position.
The Breds broke the game open in the sixth as they pushed across five runs in the inning. West started the rally with a one-out single up the middle. Clay Fuson reached on an error and Clay Kelly singled to center to load the bases. Taylor Mathews drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single up the middle. After a wild pitch scored the second run, Stetson drove in two runners with a double deep into the left-field corner. Anthony Bayus closed out the scoring with a two-out run-scoring double to left center.
Taylor Cox (0-4) took the loss for UTM after giving up seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits over 5.2 innings.
Stetson paced the offense by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bayus added three hits and two RBIs.
The two teams will close out the series with the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
