The Murray State Racers host the Omaha Mavericks in the second round of the of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Monday (March 24) game tips at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., and can heard on Racer Radio over the air on Froggy 103.7 FM. Online audio is available on Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The Racers (19-11) haven't played at home in nearly a month. When they won their 11th straight on their home court over Morehead State (Feb. 22), it was thought to be the last home game of the season. However, the Racers accepted an invitation into the CIT and won a thriller at Missouri State 66-63 Wednesday (March 19) setting up the chance for MSU to come home.
The game marks the first MSU home post-season game since hosting a quarterfinal game of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in 2010 which was an 84-51 win over Tennessee State (03-02-10). The last time MSU hosted a home game after the OVC Tournament was in 1983 when Wake Forest visited old Racer Arena for the National Invitation Tournament and beat Ron Greene's Racers 87-70 (03-17-83). MSU is playing in the CIT for the first time and Monday's game marks MSU's 29th all-time post-season game in their 23rd all-time appearance. MSU has 15 trips to the NCAA Tournament, seven to the NIT and now one to the CIT. The Racers are 3-3 in post-season games since 2010 which includes two wins in the NCAA's.
MSU beat Missouri State in comeback fashion. Tyler Rambo made a steal and scored his only basket of the game with 1:13 remaining to cut the Bears lead to 63-62. Â Cameron Payne's basket with 19.6 remaining put MSU in front for good.
The Racers are one win from having five-straight 20-win seasons. MSU came into this season tied with the teams from 1996-2000 with four straight 20-win campaigns under Coach Mark Gottfried and Tevester Anderson. Billy Kennedy started the current run in 2009-10 and it continued in Coach Steve Prohm's first two seasons. In the last five seasons, the Racers are 125-37 (.771) and have averaged 25 wins per season. Steve Prohm has guide his program into it's second post-season in three seasons with the Racers.
Omaha (17-14) won their CIT opener 91-75 over North Dakota at home last Wednesday to mark the school's first post-season win. The Mavericks are reclassifying to NCAA D-I and went 5-9 this season in the Summit League. The Racers are meeting UNO for the first time. MSU is 8-0 against current Summit teams.
Lone senior Dexter Fields is two points from 500 in his two seasons with the Racers and OVC Freshman of the Year Cameron Payne is 22 points from 500 this season. This season marks the 10th time since 1948 that the Racers have three players with 400 points. Payne leads with 488, with Jarvis Williams at 439 and Jeffery Moss with 400. Last season MSU also had three with 400 including: Isaiah Canaan (676), Stacy Wilson (418) and Ed Daniel (409).
