The Murray State offense managed only six singles Sunday afternoon as SIU Edwardsville handed the Breds a 6-0 defeat in the series finale at Reagan Field.
SIUE (9-12, 7-2 OVC) got all the offense they would need in the first inning as Skyler Geissinger delivered a two-run double into the right-field corner and Alec Saikal followed with a sacrifice fly.
Right hander Jake Stauffenberg (1-3) took control of the game from there as he retired the first 11 hitters he faced before giving up a two-out single to Anthony Bayus in the fourth inning. Stauffenberg finished the day by allowing five hits and striking out seven over seven innings. Â
After the Cougars pushed across two more runs in the third and one in the fourth, left hander Sheldon Baxter came out of the bullpen and kept the SIUE offense quiet. The sophomore allowed three hits and struck out two over four shutout innings.
Cody Maerz (1-4) took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits over four innings.
Dalton West paced the Breds offense by going 2-for-3.
The Breds return to action Tuesday afternoon as they welcome Southern Illinois to Reagan Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
