Match Notes
Fresh off their back-to-back weekend wins over OVC opponents Tennessee State and Belmont, Murray State's women's tennis team will look to improve to 4-0 in the conference as they travel to Austin Peay for a midweek matinee, March 25.
MSU went 4-1 in five matches last week, including 3-0 in conference play. Their only loss came to #47 ranked Tennessee.
This is the first time the Racers started off 3-0 in conference play since 2011-12 and first time under head coach, Olga Elkin. The Racers shutout both TSU and Belmont, 6-0 and 7-0 and defeated Jacksonville State 6-1 to open their OVC schedule.
Both Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova went 4-1 last week, losing only to Tennessee. Eleonore Tchakarova, playing at third singles, took Laurence Guevremont of UT to three sets before dropping the tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-2). The sister's also teamed up at first doubles in all five matches, winning three, with the Belmont match going unfinished, up 4-3.
The Racers have historically handled the Governors with a 43-16 all-time record against APSU. MSU is also 21-11 in Clarksville.
The Racers defeated the Govs 7-0 a year ago and have won 18 of 23 matches dating back to 1994.
APSU is 2-1 in conference play to start the 2014 season. Like the Racers, they defeated TSU and Belmont this past weekend. Their only loss came at Jacksonville State, 6-1. Overall, APSU is 5-7 this spring and 3-4 at home. They've been on a roll lately though, winning five of their last seven matches.
APSU has seen most of their singles success come from the second and third draws. Ornella Di Salvo is 7-5 in spring matches playing mostly second singles, but is also 2-0 in the first spot. Vanessa Tavares has done a solid job holding down the No. 3 position. She's 6-6 winning three of her last four matches.
Di Salvo and Andra Cornea are the only doubles team with a winning record. The pair is 6-4 playing at first doubles.
The match is scheduled for 1:30 pm at the Governors Tennis Center.
