The Murray State Racers host the Pacific Tigers in the semifinal round of the of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Tuesday (April 1) game tips at 8 p.m. CT at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., and can heard on Racer Radio over the air on Froggy 103.7 FM. Online audio is available on Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. CBS Sports Network will televise the game.
The Racers (21-11) and Tigers (18-15) are each 3-0 in the CIT. MSU defeated Missouri State on the road before beating Omaha and Towson at home last week. Pacific started with a road win at Grand Canyon and then beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi and San Diego at home.
Murray State and Pacific have met only once and it came on neutral court. The game happened at the Evansville Holliday Tournament in December of 1971. The Racers won 90-87 for Head Coach Cal Luther.
The Racers are the 10th team in school history since 1948 (the modern era from the start of the OVC) to have three players with 400 points. Cameron Payne leads the way with 527, as he is the second freshman to score 500 in MSU history joining Lamont Sleets who had 522 points in the 1979-80 season. Jarvis Williams is 29 points from 500 and his 326 rebounds is 17th on the all-time season list. Jeffery Moss has 424 points.
The Racers have won 13 straight games at home including going 8-0 this season in conference games. MSU is 15-1 at home this season with the one loss coming to Middle Tennessee (Nov. 26).
The Racers are playing their first home post-season games since 1983 when Wake Forest visited old Racer Arena. MSU is playing in the CIT for the first time and Tuesday's game marks MSU's 31st all-time post-season game in their 23rd all-time appearance. MSU has 15 trips to the NCAA Tournament, seven to the NIT and now one to the CIT. The Racers are 5-3 in post-season games since 2010 which includes two wins in the NCAA's and three in the CIT.
The Racers hae secured their fifth-straight 20-win season, the first in MSU history spanning 89 seasons. Billy Kennedy's teams were 31-5 and 23-9 in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Steve Prohm's first two teams went 31-2 in 2011-12 and 20-11 in 2012-13. In the last five seasons, the Racers are 127-37 (.773) and have averaged 25 wins per season. Steve Prohm has guided his program into it's second post-season in three seasons with the Racers. Prohm is the only coach in MSU history to win 20 games in his first three seasons.
The CIT semifinals will both be played Tuesday night. The early game on the CBS Sports Network is Yale (18-13) visiting VMI (22-12) in Lexington, Va. The game site for the CIT championship for Thursday (April 3) will be known after the semifinals are finished.
Murray State students are asked to come to the game in a costume.
