Murray State's Cameron Payne is a finalist for the 2014 Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year award as announced by CollegeInsider.com.
The winner of the 2014 Macy award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet in Dallas (April 4) at the NCAA Final Four.
Payne, out of Bartlett, Tenn., has turned in a fantastic freshman season for the Racers including being named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. He follows former Racers Ivan Aska (2008-09) and Isaiah Canaan (2009-10) who were also named OVC Freshman of the Year.
Payne has started every game this season and helped the Racers to a second place conference finish and to its fifth straight 20-win season at 21-11. Payne and the Racers host the CIT semifinals Tuesday at home against the Pacific Tigers.
Until this season, there was only one MSU freshman to score 500 points in a single season. Add Cameron Payne to the list with 527 points to join Lamont Sleets who was the first in the 1979-80 season. Payne has 175 assists which is second for a single-season at Murray State. He is eighth on the list of MSU players in combined points/assists for a single season among those with at least 100 assists. He made his debut at MSU with a 21-point showing in the season opener at Valparaiso (Nov. 8). It was the best debut since Antoine Whelchel scored 27 against Gardner Webb in 2000. Payne is the first Racer freshman to have two 20-point games since Ivan Aska did it in 2008-09.
Payne scored his first MSU double-double against Austin Peay (Jan. 31) with 12 points and 12 assists. His best scoring game was 29 points (Feb. 6) at Belmont. He also set the MSU record and was two off the OVC single-season record with nine OVC Freshman of the Week awards.
The Kyle Macy award is presented annually to the top freshman in NCAA D-I men's college basketball. Macy was the 1975 Indiana "Mr. Basketball" and played his
freshman season at Purdue before transferring to Kentucky in 1976. Macy was a three-time All-America for the Wildcats and three-time All-SEC player and a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team.
