A one-out double from Anthony Bayus in the first inning proved to be the only hit Murray State would get as Jacksonville State took the rubber game of the three-game series, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field.
JSU starter Taylor Shields (4-3) had his best outing of his career as he allowed an unearned run on just the one hit in eight-plus innings. He struck out six and walked two.
The Gamecocks (21-14, 11-4 OVC) struck first in the second inning as Stephen Bartlett doubled inside the bag at third and scored on Andrew Bishop's single up the middle. JSU loaded the bases with one out and the Breds got the ground ball they wanted, but unfortunately the ball was misplayed and two runs scored. The inning came to an end one batter later after Ty Stetson made a diving catch in foul territory and threw in to second to complete the double play.
JSU added a run in the sixth inning as Andrew Bishop doubled and scored on a Tyler Gamble's single through the left side. A successful sacrifice bunt with a runner at third in the seventh helped extend the lead to 5-0.
MSU (15-18, 9-9 OVC) finally got on the board in the ninth as Taylor Mathews reached on a three-base throwing error. Stetson drove him in with a groundout to second.
Sheldon Baxter (1-3) took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits over 5.2 innings.
Bayus collected the only hit and drew a pair of walks hitting in the two spot in the lineup for the first time.
The Breds return to action Tuesday afternoon as they welcome Evansville to Reagan Field. First pitch is set fro 3 p.m.
