RACERHOOPALOOZA Set For Aug 7-8

The second annual RacerHoopaLooza for Murray State Basketball is set for August 7–8, 2014.
RacerHoopaLooza, sponsored by CFSB (Community Financial Services Bank), is a gathering of Murray State basketball alumni and fans to celebrate the tradition which has made Racer Basketball the best in the Ohio Valley Conference and one of the top programs in the nation. The Racers boast 27 consecutive winning seasons and just capped their fifth consecutive 20-win season with the CollegeInsider.com tournament championship.
More than 260 alumni and fans attended the 2013 RacerHoopaLooza banquet and nearly 90 golfers participated in the scramble, held at The Murray Country Club.
Racer fans and former players and coaches are encouraged to make plans to be part of this summer event.
This year, the RacerHoopaLooza special honoree is the 1964 team, which was MSU's first to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Coach Cal Luther's Racers played Loyola (IL) in a first-round matchup in Evanston, Ill. Jim Jennings led the Racers with 24 points in the 101-91 loss to the Ramblers. Many of the players from the 1964 team will be on hand at the RacerHoopaLooza as well as Coach Luther.
Confirmed speakers for the event include Racer Greats Isaiah Canaan (2009-13), Popeye Jones (1988-92), Bennie Purcell (1949-52), Jim Jennings (1962-64) and Coach Luther.
Luther led MSU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 1964, guided the Racers through17 seasons, matching the program record he shares with MSU's first coach Carlisle Cutchin (1925-41). Luther's 251 wins is only four behind Cutchin for tops all-time with the Racers. Luther is one of six MSU coaches that have led the Racers to multiple trips to the NCAA's. His came in 1964 & 1969.
Under Cal's leadership, the Racers won three Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles and one OVC Tournament title. During his tenure, the Racers had a run of five straight seasons (1967-71) in which they won the OVC championship or finished runner-up. Cal was named OVC Coach of the Year each time the Racers went to the NCAA's and he had 17 players named All-OVC. Cal coached four OVC Player of the Year winners: Jim Jennings (1964), Claude Virden (1969) and Les Taylor (1971 & 1972).
RacerHoopalooza 2014 salutes Coach Luther and the first NCAA team as well as the rest of the Racers' NCAA teams at this year's event.
Activities get underway (Aug. 7) with a reception and banquet in the CFSB Center. Other activities include a Friday morning golf scramble (Aug. 8) at The Murray Country Club and time for former Racer players to play pick-up games in the Gene W. Ray Center, the Racers' new practice facility.
