OVC Release
For the second time this season and fourth time in her career, Murray State junior track athlete, Tonia Pratt, has been named the OVC Field Athlete of the Week. Pratt also won the award during the indoor season, February 19. The voting for the OVC Track Athlete of the Week is done by the conference.
Pratt set two MSU records this past weekend at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational in the hammer throw and the shot put. Her distance in the hammer throw also broke her own conferene record, set at the OVC Championship meet in 2013.
Pratt bettered her hammer throw record with a throw of 56.23m (184' 6") and finished in third place overall in the event and second among NCAA competitors.
Pratt then set her sights on taking down the school shot put record, the only throwing record (other than javelin) that she does not own. The junior finally eclipsed the mark set by Shameka Dial in 2009. Pratt's throw of 15.01m (49' 3"), sets the record by seven inches. Like the hammer throw, Pratt finished in third place overall and second among NCAA competitors.
Though she did not set a record, Pratt had another top-10 finish in the discus throw. Pratt finished in sixth place with a season-best throw of 39.58m (129' 10.50").
Pratt's marks in the shot put and hammer throw also put her in the NCAA top-50. She currently ranks 34th in the shot put and 47th in the hammer throw.
Pratt and the Racers are back in action this weekend in MSU's home meet, the Margaret Simmons Invitational, Friday, April 4.
