Michael Hargrove drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to cap off a two-run inning to give Murray State a come-from-behind, 4-3, victory over Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Trailing by one heading into the bottom of the 10th, Matt McGowan and Anthony Bayus walked to start the inning. Tyler Lawrence put down a bunt, and everybody was safe as the throw to third was not in time. Kollin Dowdy was hit by the next pitch to tie the game, and the EIU reliever threw four-straight out of the zone to end the game.
The Panthers (8-22, 3-8 OVC) struck quickly in the first inning as a leadoff walk came around to score as part of a two-run inning. Brant Valach drove in the first with a double past the bag at third, and Cameron Berra followed with an RBI single to center field.
That would be all the Panthers would score for the next eight innings as Brock Downey would settle in from there. Downey did not allow another run through the ninth inning.
He came out for the 10th and walked the leadoff hitter. He picked off the runner, but was called for a balk. That runner later scored on a push bunt from Valach.
Downey did not factor in to the decision after tossing a career-long 9.1 innings. He allowed three runs on 10 hits and two strikeouts. John Lollar (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory as he tossed the final two-thirds of an inning.
The Breds (14-14, 8-6 OVC) got on the board in the third as Bayus ripped a two-out, two-run triple to right center. The hit scored Mathews, who had singled, from second, and McGowan, who walked, from first.
EIU starter Jake Johansmeier was effective in the no decision as he gave up just two runs on six hits over 7.1 innings. Jaden Widdersheim (2-1) took the loss after allowing all four hitters he faced to reach, with two crossing the plate.
Bayus paced the Breds offense by going 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs. McGowan went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and scored two runs.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
