Murray State's women's track team will descend upon Edwardsville, Ill. for the 2014 OVC Track and Field Championships. The two-day event will be held Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3.
The Racers hold a number of high marks in the conference already. 2013 Athlete of the Championship Tonia Pratt will be back competing. Last year she finished in first place in both the hammer and discus throws and took third in the shot put. Currently, Pratt is second in the OVC in both the shot put and discus and fourth in the hammer throw.
Sticking with the throws, Sydney Potts will also be returning to the championships. Potts won the javelin throw in 2013 and has eclipsed her personal-best from a year ago.
Also competing in the field events will be Kiara Austin and Katie Forshey. Forshey, a senior, will be representing Murray State in her fourth OVC Outdoor Championships. She jumped a personal-best 5' 7" at the indoor championships in February, placing fourth.
Austin also jumped a personal-best in the triple jump at the indoor championships. She placed fourth in that event and will be jumping in the triple and long jump events this weekend.
Junior Ashley Conway finished in second place in the pentathlon at the indoor meet, her highest ever at a conference meet as an individual. She also took third place a year ago in the high jump.
On the track Emma Gilmore will be looking to add to her 2014 medal collection. Gilmore won three medals at the 2014 indoor OVC Championships in February, and ranks sixth in the conference in the 800m and 1500m runs. Gilmore finished in third place in both the mile and 800m runs indoor, and second as a part of the school-record-setting distance medley relay team.
Also a part of Murray State's distance group is Brittany Bohn. Bohn currently holds top-10 positions in the 800m (ninth) and 1500m (third) events within the conference.
Over to the sprints where Hannah McAllister leads a young group. McAllister currently ranks sixth in the OVC in 100m dash and 15th in the 200m dash. A year ago, McAllister finished fifth in the 100m and was a part of the second place 4x100m relay team.
McAllister is joined by freshmen Taylor Adcock and Victoria Yocum. Adcock has been consistent at the 400m hurdles and ranks seventh in the OVC. Yocum has competed in every sprint from the 100m-400m dashes. She has top 20 marks in all three events, but her highest position in the OVC comes in the 400m, where she is ranked 13th.
Friday's events will start at 9 a.m. with the multis. Field events will get under way at noon and the first track events will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday's portion also has a 9 a.m. start time for the multis, with the field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the track events at 2 p.m.
Fans can watch as the meet will be streamed on the OVC Digital Network.
