Murray State managed just one run over nine innings, and Belmont pushed across two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to break open a tie game and hand the Breds a 5-1 defeat Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
BEL (22-27-1, 11-14-1 OVC) put together a two-out rally in the first inning to get on the board. Matt Beaty started things with a single to center, and then scored on Jamie Ritchie's double to center field.
The Breds (19-28, 11-15 OVC) got the equalizer in the third as Ty Stetson singled through the right side and stole second. Kollin Dowdy drove him in with a single through the left side.
The game was a pitcher's duel between MSU's Brock Downey and the Bruins Austin Coley. Both pitchers kept the opposing offense in check, until the Bruins were up to get to Downey in the sixth.
With two on, the Bruins attempted a double successful double steal. When the ball was thrown away at third, the first run scored. Two batters later, Nick Egli delivered a sacrifice fly to center field. BU added two more runs in the seventh on a Beaty two-run single to center field.
Coley (5-1) picked up the victory by allowing just the one run on four hits and seven strikeouts over six innings. Downey (8-3) suffered his second-straight defeat after giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and five strikeouts over 8.1 innings. Downey has thrown 98.2 innings this season, and is on the cusp of becoming just the second pitcher in MSU history to throw more than 100 innings in a season.
Tyler Lawrence went 2-for-4 to lead the offense.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Breds will honor seniors Cameron Finch, Tyler Saltsman and Ty Stetson, along with manager Austin Starks.
