Murray State's women's track team had strong performances on day one of the OVC championships. The Racers took a number of podium places and placed a few more in tomorrow's finals. Through seven events, the Racers have 23 points.
Tonia Pratt, the 2013 outdoor Field Athlete of the Championship, found herself back on the podium. Pratt finished in third place in the discus with a throw of 44.42 (145' 9"). Pratt will also compete on day two in the hammer throw and shot put.
Ashley Conway made a name for herself. Through four of seven events of the heptathlon, she stands in second place with 2832 points. Conway took first place in the shot put and high jump events of the heptathlon. Conway also scored for the Racers in the open long jump and high jump. She placed seventh with a jump of 5.61m (18' 5") in the long and cleared 1.60m (5' 3") in the high jump to tie for third place.
Conway tied in the high jump with fellow Racer Katie Forshey. The senior placed in the high jump for the third time in four years at the OVC championships.
MSU also scored points from Sydney Potts in the javelin throw. Potts' throw of 39.94m (131') was good for third place.
The Racers saw two more athletes qualify for finals tomorrow. Hannah McAllister finished in seventh in the 100m dash (12.18) and Emma Gilmore finished in sixth in the preliminary round in the 800m (2:15.48).
Both Taylor Adcock and Brittany Bohn just missed qualifying for tomorrow's finals in the 400m hurdles and 800m run, respectively. Adcock circled the track in 1:05.71 and Bohn crossed the tape in 2:15.31. Though Bohn finished with a faster time than Gilmore, Gilmore finished in second place in her heat to automatically qualify.
Tomorrow will be the finals of the track events in addition to the 4x100m and 4x400m relays and the 1500m and 5,000m runs. The heptathlon will finish up with the long jump, javelin and 800m run and the hammer throw, shot put and triple jump will also take place.
The multi events will kick off day two with the long jump beginning at 9 a.m. The first field event for the women will be the hammer throw at 1 p.m. and the track events will start at 2 p.m. with the 4x100m relay.
