Breds Battle Before Falling at SEMO
5/3/2014 5:16:00 PM | Baseball
Southeast Missouri State got a pair of two-out, two-run home runs to take the lead, and held off a late Murray State rally in an 8-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field.
The Breds (18-26, 10-13 OVC) fell behind 2-0, but came back in the third inning to tie the game. Anthony Bayus got MSU on the board with an RBI triple to right center, and then scored on Kollin Dowdy's double into the right-field corner.
The momentum didn't remain in the Breds dugout for long. After the first two hitters were retired in the home-half of the inning, a two-out walk was followed by a Matt Tellor two-run homer to left center. The same scenario played out for SEMO (31-15, 21-5 OVC) in the sixth as a two-out single was followed by a two-run homer from Cole Ferguson.
MSU scored its third run of the game in the sixth as Michael Hargrove was hit by a pitch and went to third on a Matt McGowan single and error. Clay Kelly, who made two great defensive plays at third, drove in Hargrove with a groundout.
Bayus hit his firs collegiate home run in the seventh, but Tellor came back with his second of the game in the eighth.
The Breds did not go quietly in the ninth after Dowdy singled with one out and Tyler Lawrence followed with a walk. McGowan drove in both runners with a double into the left-field corner. Luke Daugherty drew a walk to put the tieing run on first, but a called third strike ended the game.
SEMO was able to get to MSU ace Brock Downey (8-2), touching him up for seven runs on eight hits over six innings. Redhawk starter Travis Hayes (7-1) picked up the victory after giving up four runs, three earned, on 11 hits over eight innings.
Bayus had one of his best games of the season as went 3-for-5, finishing a single shy of the cycle. He also drove in two runs and scored two more. Dowdy, Lawrence, McGowan and Taylor Mathews each added two hits as the Breds collected 13 as a team. Â
The two teams will play the third game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
