Â
Director of Athletics Allen Ward announced today that Jorge Caetano (pronounced George Kai-ette-tano) will serve as interim head coach for the women's tennis team during the 2014-15 season. Caetano served as a graduate assistant last season during the team's memorable OVC title run.
Â
"I certainly didn't expect a vacancy at this point in the year, so my immediate priority was doing everything I could to ensure this group of talented young ladies doesn't miss a beat as they prepare to defend their OVC championship," said Director of Athletics Allen Ward. "Jorge provides us with the stability, familiarity and skill set necessary to make this year as memorable as the last."
Â
Caetano is no stranger to Racers tennis as the Niteroi, Brazil native was a four-year letter winner for Murray State from 2009-12. He amassed 21 singles wins and 24 doubles wins during his career and played his senior season at No. 1 in both singles and doubles. He is also a Murray State graduate with a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering technology and is currently pursuing his M.B.A.
Â
"I'm excited to have Jorge lead the team and pleased he brings a sense of normalcy to the program at a time when it really needs it," said Ward. "He's an incredibly bright and talented individual with a great future in coaching. With his leadership, and the resilient team we have coming back, we're going to be just fine."
Â
"I want to thank Allen Ward for this opportunity and Matt Kelly and Mel Purcell for their support," said Caetano. "Being a coach has always been my goal and I've enjoyed my time as assistant coach, but now I am looking forward to working with this team as the head coach. Coach Elkin left us with a talented squad and they're ready to defend their OVC title and to improve on it."
