Racers Open At The ISTAP Collegiate Cup

Head coach David Schwepker and the Racers will start their 2014 campaign this weekend at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup in Montgomery, Alabama. The three match tournament gets started with the Racers facing a pair of opponents Friday at 12:30 and 5:00 with the Racers taking on Southern University and then South Carolina State. MSU concludes the weekend Saturday against host Alabama State at 12:30.
MSU capped their 2013 season with a 3-1 win over Eastern Kentucky. After winning the first set 25-19, EKU came back and won the second set 25-22. Murray State was able to pull together and win the next to sets, 25-19 and 25-16, respectively.
Alyssa Lelm led the team with 14 kills, while Emily Schmahl added 13. Senior Katlyn Hudson led the defense with 16 digs, followed by Sam Bedard. The Racers ended their 2013-14 campaign 16-14 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
Friday will be the first ever meeting between Murray State and both Southern University and South Carolina State.
Last season, Southern University was 9-1. Southern University is part of the Southwestern Conference (SWAC). Murray State has faced three teams from SWAC and holds a 4-0 advantage.
Southern University is led by sophomore duo Phalen Clark and Diamond Williams. Clark led the team in kills (232), kills per set (2.27), assists (469) and assists per set (4.60). Williams led the team in service aces (35), service aces per set (0.34), digs (306) and digs per set (3.00).
South Carolina State finished 2013 with a 6-22 record. This is only the third time the Lady Bulldogs have finished a season with six or fewer wins. The Lady Bulldogs were predicted to finish fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division. The Racers have faced three teams from MEAC and hold a 3-1 advantage.
South Carolina is led by juniors Melanie Williams and Marissa Lawrence. Williams is the starting setter with 747 assists, which currently ranks in the top 10 in South Carolina State history for career assists. Lawrence is an outside hitter who averages 1.9 kills per set. The team has six newcomers with four returners.
Murray State will face Alabama State on Aug 30 at 12:30pm. The Racers have only faced the Hornets once and it came last season at a neutral site. Murray State holds the advantage over Alabama State after beating them 3-0 in Greensboro, N.C.
Alabama State was the SWAC champions last season. They are predicted to finish first in the SWAC this season. They return four All-Conference players including their offensive player of the year Amber Bennett. Bennett led the league in kills (388) and blocks (127). The Lady Hornets also return Tiara Kelley and Myla Marshall, both First-Team All-Conference selections. The trio (Bennett, Kelley, Marshall) accounted for over 55 percent of the teams kills last season.Â
