Racer Volleyball Travels to Liberty Invitational

The Racers continue this weekend at the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia. MSU will face host Liberty Friday at 7:00 before facing a pair of opponents Saturday at 8:00am (USC Upstate) and 3:30 (Howard).
Murray State began their 2014 season last weekend at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup in Montgomery, Alabama. Murray State went 3-0 in the tournament defeating Southern University, South Carolina State, and Alabama State.
Kristen Besselsen earned Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the tournament. She recorded 3.10 kills per set and hit .373. Besselsen recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and a career-high 15 digs in the win over Alabama State. She was also selected to the ISTAP All-Tournament Team.
Ellie Lorenz earned OVC Defensive Player of the Week for her contribution to the team. She led the Racers with 45 digs over the 10 sets. She had two double-dig outings. Lorenz recorded 18 digs versus Southern and 19 against Alabama State. Against, South Carolina State, she finished with eight digs.
This weekend is the first time Murray State will face any of these opponents.
Tournament host, Liberty, went 2-1 at the Elon Phoenix Classic to start their 2014 campaign. They swept San Jose State and Elon 3-0, while falling to Maryland 3-2. The Lady Flames also defeated James Madison during a mid-week match.
Hannah Weidner and Jade Vorster were both named to the Elon Phoenix Classic All-Tournament team. Weidner averaged 3.27 kills, while Vorster hit .413 and averaged 1.00 blocks per set. Weidner is the first Lady Flame in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) to open her career with four straight double-digit kill matches. Vorster leads the team with 13 total blocks.
Caroline Douglas had a season-high 19 kills that led to four players in double-figures against Maryland. Douglas is second on the team in kills with 48. She averages 3.20 kills per set.
USC Upstate Spartans went 2-2 during their opening season Big Orange Bash Tournament in Clemson, South Carolina. They defeated UNC Asheville 3-1 and Austin Peay 3-0, and fell to Clemson 3-1 and Troy 3-2.
Lexi Gober was selected to the Big Orange Bash All-Tournament Team. She recorded one double-double against Troy with 45 assists and 15 digs. Gober averages 9.38 assists per set while also averaging 2.38 digs per set.
 Kayla Eversgerd also recorded two double-doubles during the tournament, one against UNC Asheville and the other against Troy. Against UNC Asheville she provided 14 kills and 11 digs. Eversgerd recorded 11 kills and 15 digs against Troy.
Howard went 1-2 during the District of Columbia Volleyball Challenge. The Bison defeated George Mason, while falling to American and Georgetown. They defeated La Salle 3-1 during a mid-week match.
Khalia Donaldson was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. She recorded a pair of double-doubles in kills and digs in her first two collegiate games against George Mason (21 kills and 15 digs) and American (15 kills and 13 digs). During the match against La Salle, Donaldson recorded 17 kills and added six digs.
Stephanie Shultis records 9.47 assists per set. She also records 1.33 points and 1.47 digs per set. Shultis leads the team with 142 assists.Â
