Shooting its best score since the season opener, the eighth-ranked Murray State rifle team began the second half of its season with a sweep of Columbus State and UT Martin on Saturday and Sunday at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray. The Racers shot a 2313 in smallbore and a 2354 in air rifle for a total score of 4667, just five points off the season best of 4672, to top No. 15 UT Martin's 4605 and No. 20 Columbus State's 4493.
"When we left for the holidays, I asked them to maintain the standard we had set for smallbore and get ready to raise the level of air rifle we compete at," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. Â "We were two points above our season average in smallbore and eight above air rifle. I think we return focused and intent on taking the next step."
Freshman Ivan Roe led MSU on the weekend with team highs of 582 in smallbore and 593 in air rifle. The 582 in smallbore ties Roe's career-high in the event, while is 593 in air rifle is a new personal best.
"I thought Ivan had an outstanding match," said Lollar. "He tied his personal best in smallbore and set a new one in air rifle. The rest of the team was solid. I'm very pleased with Bobby [Broadstreet]. He came back and posted a personal best (587) in air rifle that is high enough to earn him a chance this coming weekend."
Kelsey Emme, Ben Estes and Tessa Howald followed Roe in smallbore with each shooting a 577, while Ryan Limpus shot a 569. In air rifle Howald shot a 588 and was followed closely by Estes and Emme who shot a 587 and 586, respectively. Kaitlyn Wilson rounded out the squaded shooters in air rifle with a 573, while Robert Broadstreet also set a career mark with score of 587.
Murray State will hit the road this weekend as it continues OVC competition. On Saturday, the Racers will travel to Fort Benning, Georgia to take on Columbus State, followed by a showdown at second-ranked Jacksonville State Sunday.
