Just a week after setting new smallbore and aggregate program records, the fourth-ranked Murray State rifle team broke both records again Saturday to beat Jacksonville State and Morehead State in a tri-match at Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray. The Racers shot a record-breaking 2348 in smallbore and paired it with a season-high 2366 in air rifle to finish with a school-record 4714 aggregate score, besting Jax State's 4628 and Morehead's 4587.
"It's hard to know where to start," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "I am very proud of every member of this team. From top to bottom, everyone is working hard and getting better. This week, we challenged them to find a way to get more consistent and to work this week to get better at shooting the match like training and that is exactly what they did."
In just her second collegiate match, Barbara Schläpfer turned in the highest aggregate score in the nation so far this season at 1185. The Swiss freshman shot a 590 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle and finished the day with a perfect score of 100 in five of 12 positions.
"Barbara shot a really fine match," said Lollar. "Her focus and attention to detail is amazing."
Another freshman, MacKenzie Martin, also put up big numbers Saturday, setting new career marks in all three scores. Martin shot a 585 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle to finish with a total of 1176.
"I thought MacKenzie had a little bit of a breakout day. She did a fine job in both guns and really put together an all-around good match."
Ivan Roe shot a career-high 589 smallbore and a 590 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1179, while Ben Estes had a 584 smallbore and a personal best 590 in air rifle to end the day with an 1174. Tessa Howald rounded out the squaded shooters for MSU with a 574 and a 590 to finish at 1164.
"Ivan had a big day in standing smallbore (198) and was solid in air and Ben shot a great kneeling (200) and had a big air rifle for us. While, Tessa was right there doing a great job as well."
The impressive day was not limited to the counted team members, as Alathea Sellars set new personal best as well with a 579 in smallbore and a 591 on air rifle to finish with an 1170 aggregate. Junior Keri Marlin also set new career marks in the match at 578, 587 and 1175, while Kaitlyn Wilson also had a good day with a season-high 573 in smallbore.
"Alathea had a nice match after a good week of training and she will contribute in a big way very soon. Kaitlyn had a great sling today (393), along with Keri's good smallbore (578) and nice air rifle (587)."
Others scores from the match were an 1149 form Robert Broadstreet, an 1145 from Hannah Harris, an 1154 from Ryan Limpus and a 1156 from Eric Sloan.
Next Saturday, the Racers will travel to Columbus, Ohio for Ohio State's 2015 Buckeye Open. MSU will then stick around on Sunday to take on Morehead State in a neutral site dual match.
"We have had two good weeks at home and now we are faced with the tough challenge of going on the road and maintaining the consistency we have started to build."?
