The Murray State women's basketball team opens its 49th season Friday night at the CFSB Center as the Racers host Oakland City at 5 p.m. MSU is entering its eighth season under Head Coach Rob Cross. The Racers look to rebound from their 8-21 campaign a season ago.
MSU is led by 2014-15 OVC Freshman of the Year Ke'Shunan James who was named to this year's Preseason All-OVC Team in October at OVC Media Day in Nashville. James was second on the team a season ago averaging 15.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. James scored in double figures in all but four games last season and had seven contests with 20 points or more.
Joining James as returnees are seniors Bianca Babic, Kyra Gulledge, Jashae Lee and Ajee Smith. Junior LeAsia Wright also returns to this year's squad, as well as sophomores Jasmine Borders and Lexii Cassell. The Racers will also feature seven new faces in 2015-16 as transfers Bria Bethea, Krystal James and Daniella Pisano enter their first season at MSU. Kacie Fountain, Abria Gulledge, Michaela Manley and Taylor Reese are all freshman.
The Racers also feature three new faces on the sidelines as assistant coaches Keisha McClinic and Aubrey Reese are in their first seasons with MSU. Graduate assistant Keiona Kirby is also in her first year as a coach with the Racers.
The Lady Oaks return their top two scorers from last season in Chelsea Jellison and Raven Greer who averaged 14.7 and 14.1 points per game, respectively last year. Jellison also led the team with 5.3 rebounds, 84 3-pointers and 89 steals in 2014-15 and is the only player to start all 25 games for OCU. Oakland City does need to replace two starters from last year's 8-17 squad and has a new head coach for the third consecutive season.
The Racers are 19-29 all-time in season openers and are 23-25 in home openers. MSU is 5-2 under coach Cross in both season and home openers.
