The Murray State Racers begin the Coach Matt McMahon era with an exhibition game Thursday (Nov. 5) when they welcome the Freed-Hardeman Lions to the CFSB Center for a 7 p.m. game.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis. Free video streaming of the game will be seen on OVCDigitalNetwork.com
This game marks the fourth-straight season the Racers and Lions have met in an exhibition game dating back to 2012.
Much has changed since the Racers were last seen on the hardwood last March 25 when Old Dominion's Trey Freeman threw in a miracle 3-pointer to win 72-69 in the National Invitational Tournament quarterfinals. The loss ended an amazing season for the Racers (29-6) that included their 24th Ohio Valley Conference regular season title, a 25-game win streak and another national top-25 ranking.
In June, the Racers experienced a sudden change only 76 days after the ODU loss when Coach Steve Prohm took the job at Iowa State and Coach Matt McMahon became the 16th Coach in MSU history. Now without a talented quartet lost to graduation, including Cameron Payne to the NBA, the Racers face the 2015-16 season with many unknowns. The Racers did benefit from their tour of Ottawa and Montreal, Canada.
Jeffery Moss is now a senior and set to become the 43rd Racer to reach 1,000 career points with his first 32 points this season. Moss represents the only returning starter and MSU's only selection to the OVC Preseason Team. The Racers have added many pieces that will get tested with a strong pre-conference schedule. The Racers have eight players that will be wearing the Murray State jersey for the first time. The Racers are pressed to replace 72 percent of their scoring from last season and 64 percent of its rebounding.
However, even with the graduation losses, the Racers were selected first in the OVC Preseason poll of the West Division. Belmont was the favorite in the OVC East and was the overall favorite in a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
The Racers open their 91st season of collegiate basketball Friday (Nov. 13) when they host the Harris-Stowe Hornets.
