The Murray State women's basketball team begins the New Year by beginning conference play as the Racers host Morehead State at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 2 at "The Bank". MSU is coming off a 101-57 win in an exhibition contest against Lindenwood-Belleville on Dec. 30 at the CFSB Center. LeAsia Wright led the Racers with 33 points on 13-of-22 shooting in the game.
MSU's last contest that counted came back on Dec. 19 when the Racers fell at then-10th-ranked Florida State 101-59 in Tallahassee. The Racers made a season-high 16 3-pointers in the loss and hit 40 percent from beyond the arc. Ke'Shunan James led all scorers with 24 points in the loss while Wright added 21. Both went 6-for-12 from beyond the arc in the contest.
Four of Morehead State's five starters are averaging 10 points or more scoring so far this season and are led by Eriel McKee's 15.9 points per game. McKee, along with Miranda Crockett leads MSU with 7.6 rebounds per game. Crockett and Shay Steele are both second on the team averaging 14.3 points per contest. Crockett also is averaging five assists per game, a mark that leads the OVC. The Eagles have used the same five starters in all 14 games this season.
As a team, Morehead leads the league in scoring averaging 84.6 points per game but is deadlast in the league in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score 84.4 per game. The Eagles also lead the conference in rebounding at 47.1 per game. MSU is led by Head Coach Greg Todd who is in his second season with the Eagles.
Saturday's contest will be just the fifth at home this season for the Racers and will be the first of three straight at the CFSB Center to begin league play.
