The Murray State baseball team's late rally fell short Sunday in the series finale at Southern Mississippi as the Racers fell 6-5 in game three. MSU trailed 6-2 in the eighth before getting three runs in the inning to make things interesting.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Southern Miss. (3-0) was able to take a 3-0 lead after a one-run second inning and two-run third. The Racers (0-3) responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs of their own. Kipp Moore drew a bases loaded walk in the inning to get MSU on the board for the first time and Matt McGowan brought in Nick Moore with a fielder's choice RBI later in the inning.
USM however, would respond with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-2 and added another in the sixth to make it a 6-2 deficit for MSU. Murray State then went to work with its three-run eighth inning.
Derek Yoder and Dalton West opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Reed Thompson provided a pinch-hit single to bring home pinch runner Clay Kelly to make the score 6-4. It was 6-5 after a Matthew Johnson RBI double to left scored K. Moore. The Golden Eagles were able to lockdown the rest of the inning, inducing back-to-back groundouts to get out of the jam.
Ryan Milton came on in the ninth to pick up his second save of the series for Southern Miss. Milton struck-out Tyler Lawrence and N. Moore and got Yoder to fly out to right to end the game and the series.
Andrew Bramley took the loss in the game. Bramley started the contest and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three runs off four hits and walking four batters. Tyler Anderson and John Lollar each pitched well in relief in the contest. Lollar allowed one run on a pair of hits in three innings of work while Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning for the Racers.
Three Racers, Brock Downey, Yoder and West each had a pair of hits in the loss as Murray collected 12 hits overall, its most of the series. MSU had four extra-base hits in the loss, all doubles, coming from Johnson, Lawrence, West and Yoder.
Tuesday's home opener against Harris Stowe has been postponed due to incoming weather. No makeup date has been set.
